From AdamC: Egyptian Spearmen and Beornings Fantasy (170 points)

I neglected to include the map last time. Here shows my visit to the nature stacks and now I am backtracking to Fantasy.  First up some additional Egyptians.

We have a few additional archers who where hiding on desk.
They have one leader with a bronze sword. For the period we are doing it should probably be iron or steal but I want to have them able to portray earlier Egyptians.
Here we have the backbone of any ancient army soldiers armed with shields and spears. The shields seems to have been oxide which makes sense as wood is a fairly limited resource in Egypt.
The shields had me puzzled as they did seem to make sense until I saw a historic example
As you can see in this example (ancient toy soldiers) the grip is at the narrow point.  I'm assuming position these men are holding these shields in something like "present arms" not a marching position.

There are 18 Egyptians of all types.
Next we have a little fun project a few years ago I got War Games Atlantic's Plastic Irish for slingers... I didn't get as many as I wanted and need to come up with a project. So I present the Beornings.
The Beornings are blink and you miss them culture from the Lord of the Rings. Beorn has a big roll to play in the Hobbit and after the battle of the Five Armies he organized a group of people called the woodmen into a nation that took his name.
Who these people were is an open question but I imagine they are something of a conglomeration of peoples. Refugees from Dale, the ancient people's of the period Dunlendings who left home maybe even cousins of the people of Rohan. So I mixed and matched gear from my bits box and let my imagination run a little wild (Tolkien if this isn't what you had in mind I can only say I did this with love in my heart) here are some close ups.
Some javelin armed lads
Spearmen
Aggressive swordman.
I'd say this fellow is rallying his allies or taunting his enemies

I decided to do some tree themed shields because it seemed appropriate.
A Roman style shield
A cloaked hero these cloaks are a great feature of this set.
Another leader with a horn to call men to his aide.
Another leader with a prestige tunic of blue.  I'll probably play these guys as lords of the wild in Saga I need some bowmen to support them and some bears or werebears.

Points all figures are 25/28 mm

18 Egyptians for 90 points
16 Beornings for 80 points
Possibly 20 points for fantasy (I think I can double back but I could be wrong)
For a total of 170 or 190 points

Sylvain: Your Egyptians are great, as usual, and your "Beornings" show lots of creativity on your part. I'm sure Tolkien would have approved :-). As for claiming points, I'm afraid you would have to change location by using Sarah's cart (simply done by painting a female figure, a modest price to pay). A very decent points harvest!

From AdamC: Bear Cub - Nature (25 points)

Family health issues (nothing serious just persistent and annoying) have limited my painting but I have been making progress and did finish this little fellows.
He's the last of a set of a mother bear and cubs the others have been made into Christmas ornaments for my wife (these have appeared in other challenges). They are some of Annie at Bad Squiddo games excellent collection of 25 mm animal miniatures.
This fellow is a bit cheeky with his tongue sticking out.
My daughter Evie is starting an RPG with me, and another adult and their children. The Game is called "Perils & Princess" and the character has an animal companion and I hope this fellow might work.  For points, it's a 25 mm figure so typically 5 points it's a bit small so a reduction may be appropriate. Nature should get another 20 for 25 in total.

Sylvain: This week, you bring a cute little fella to the Challenge. It's an easy pun, but the animal and your name remind me of "Grizzly Adams". I am sure the games you will play with your daughter will be lasting memories. Nice work!

AdamC: More Egyptian Archers Gift Shop (100 points)

More Egyptians for my friend Arofan's Biblical Age armies.

A few of them have the blue headdress to complete the last group others have a red brown a fairly common dye color.
Here are some close up of the headdress.
Close up of the two standards one green the other gold.
There are 16 28 mm figures at 5 points each for 80 points and another 20 for the gift shop for 100 all together.

Sylvain: There is something old school about the sculpt of these figurines which I find interesting. Your palette sticks to warm colors, which perfectly suits an ancient Egyptian army. Marvelous paint job!

From AdamC - Gunboats [Maritime] (44 points )

The family (including myself) have been battling illnesses for the past few weeks painting time has been limited but at last I have something for you. Black Seas Gunboats from Warlord games.

I got this set at sale at the Mayhem Convention, the set has three gunboat squadrons.
I can see you all counting yes there are four squadrons.
Well one of the bases had some of the cannon broken off and Warlord replaced it. I did some work on these to make them work (fortunately the front cannons weren't damaged). I really like the gaff rig for vessels of this size.
Here we have them as intended three guns (one forward and one each to port and starboard) .  I think the gunboat Philadelphia from the American revolution was and inspiration for the design.
You can see the "broadside" guns these were what was damaged on the other base. The sails are metal and painted by me so feel free to praise them this time 😉. Here is my progress so far.

Points wise I don't know if we have had Gunboats since point 1/700 ships where reworked (i found a reference in two separate posts where they were scored at 10 and 6 per base). I would suggest that 6 points seems more correct  points per base (2 per boat) for 24 plus an additional 20 points for the Maritime section of the library. (But adjust as necessary)

Sylvain: I really like how you created the sea surface on your bases. The waves seems to be at just the right scale for the gunboats. I love seeing submissions like yours that highlight the neglected little guys in the big battles. And yes, I agree with you points claim as these seem to match a 6mm vehicle, which is 2 points. Nicely done!

AdamC - Ancient Egyptian Archers (50 points)

These New Kingdom Egyptians from Old Glory are for a project my friend Arofan is working on to do some Biblical era War gaming. By this I mean the kingdom of Israel period.

That technically makes these fellows late period Egyptians the last gasp of native rule before domination by foreign powers (Persians, Greeks Romans and so on until after World War II) Fortunately with Ancient Egyptians what's is new is what is old so reto garb was the way.

They were simple linen kilts and head dresses armed with bows arrows and maybe a knife. The leader has a stone headed mace. There are 10 figures here for 50 points. The base is a temporary one so Arofan can permanently base them as he wishes. This may require a reduction in points.

Sylvain: Very nice Egyptians. I'm enticed to walk like them (cf. Bangles). Their head dress immediately suggest where they are from. I'm not going to reduce the points because I'm sure these miniatures will soon end up on a nice base. Can't wait to see the next submission of this project of biblical proportions.

From AdamC: Black Seas Overdue (134 points)

Here is a Black Seas offering Three English Frigates and and Six Brigs, three Royal Navy and three Spanish.  These are for my friend Frank Shephard in exchange for several 1/2400 ships he gave me last year.  I asked him what you want for payment and he asked me to paint is Black Seas Starter set.  I told him sure as long as you don't need them in a hurry.  Well a year later is longer than I expected so these are overdue.

HMS Squirrle  a 6th Rate Frigate the served in the Seven Years War and American Revolution.  I have told Frank he needs to pair ith with a Canadian Privateer named the Moose... a possible future project.

HMS Enterprize another AWI era 6th Rate and yes historicly the ship's name was spelt with a "z" her service was extensive but fairly unremarkable.

HMS Serapis  a famous 5th rate Frigate of the AWI period here I think Frank just likes the name as the historic Serapis was a two decked ship of 44 guns something that isn't modeled by Warlord Games at this time.

Three English brigs HMS Teaser, HMS Sparkler, HMS Fearless done in the 10 a penney fassion of the 18 gun Royal Navy hard working smallships with weather stained sails.

Three Spanish Brigs: Destructor, Furor, and Mistral probably privateers or smugglers possibly auxiliaries of the Spanish navy, ready to play cat and mouse with the Royal Navy ships above.

This is my fist real broadside of the challenge.  Based on past scoring each brig should be 10 points each for 60, and the Frigates 15 points each for another 45 and Overdue gets me up to 125 a solid step toward my goal of 500.   I'll leave it to Sylvain to handle any extra points for rigging, flags etc. and hopefully Frank will like them.

Sylvain: I especially like how you shaded your sails to create volume. It really gives a realistic feel to your miniatures. The extensive use of flags is not only a cool addition, it helps to instantly identify the nation of each of your ships. Well done!

As suggested, I will throw in 1 point per ship for the extra bits and details, bringing  the total to 134 points. Voguent les bateaux!

If you could provide a map of the Analogueville Library showing your progress, that would be appreciated.

AdamC- History Jean Bart and Richelieu (22 Points)

Greetings once again Challengers and Challenge Fans I'm off to a typically slow start with kids and the Holliday madness.  I hope you all had a good Christmas here is an shot of the family for those who may wish it. The one to one miniatures are progressing admirably.

Ok on to my small first offering. Two French Battleships.  Last year I did the USS Massachusetts this year we add her only Battleship opponent of the war the French Battleship Jean Bart from the Naval Battle of Casablanca.

Jean Bart was not quite finished at the time of the fall of France but French Shipyard workers got her ready enough for sea to sail to Casablanca to keep her out of German (and British perhaps) hands.

Facilities where not quite up to finishing a battleship in Casablanca so the French made do.  Plugging her unfinished gun emplacements with concrete and turning her into floating Battery.

Photo of Jean Bart taken by an unknown American pilot from USS Ranger.

Despite some serious handicaps (being stationary and don't believe she had all her fire control   Jean Bart did manage to land hits on the USS Massachusetts though no serious damage or casualties were caused (Massachusetts is a lucky ship).   Still it was a gallant if somewhat misguided effort.  Between Massachusetts and Ranger she was put out of action and remained out of action until after the war final coming into full commission in 1949.

The Richelieu by comparison was completed and commissioned in the early days of World War II.  She fled to Dakar where she had to fight off (successfully) several British attempts to either disable her to keep her from joining the Germans.

After the Colonial empire of France joined the Free French Richelieu was repaired and refitted at the Brooklyn Navy yard.   She went on serve in the Free French Navy working with the Royal Navy.

1/2400 scale ships are 1 point 2 points each with another 20 for history so 22 points and hope you have enjoyed my first entry of the 14th Challenge.

First, welcome back to the Challenge, Adam! That's a wonderful pic of you and your family.

It's great to have you continuing your naval interests from previous years. Great work on these two French battlewagons, backed with interesting history of their WWII service. Well done!
