August Podcasts Available As Single Download

That’s right!  We now have all of our August 2006 podcasts available as a single download.

You get all 7 podcasts in a single 156MB zipped file for easy downloading and listening.  We know that you may not subscribe to the podcast and that you may not have time to come here twice a week to listen.  But, now you can get an entire month with 1 click of a button.
To download please go to CWF August 2006 Podcasts.

Be sure to right click that link and choose Save As or Save Target As.  It’ll take awhile to download because the file is 156MB.  When it is done you need to unzip the contents.  We recommend WinRAR or Winzip.  Both are free and are great!

Imperial Literature: Monthly Writing Workshop

Greetings from Imperial Literature! I am Janshi, a moderator at the aforementioned site, and granted by our gracious host the opportunity to act as Imp-Lit’s mouthpiece to the greater wargaming community abroad.

Here’s a little background info. Imperial Literature is a Games Workshop fan fiction website that has been operating since circa 1998. We consider ourselves one of the better GW fan fiction websites on the net, with many great stories having originated from our community – the best known probably being The Darkest Angel, by Mark Barber. We are a relatively small community, but I think this works in our favour as all our members and their works get a goodly amount of attention. Our goal is to help our members and would-be writers improve in their writing and to present and provide the best Games Workshop fiction on the web. We also have a bi-monthly e-zine in the works for our members’ original fiction called Paragon Scribe, which I encourage you to send your original works to.

But now to the meat of the issue. Imperial Literature is right now holding a Monthly Writing Workshop (MWW) to help members improve their writing and storytelling skills. We’ve already had two MWW’s and are currently holding another, and we really would like you to join! The more the merrier, as the saying goes. The due date is October 10th, which I realise is not far away, but if you can’t make this MWW there’s always next month’s! I encourage you to have a try at it, even if you think yourself not that great a writer – we all have to start somewhere, after all. There is a FAQ in this month’s sign-up thread which I encourage you to read, since it essentially tells you how the MWW is run. Each MWW has a topic sentence or subject which acts as the base from which the author will build his or her piece. Previous topics have included basing the story on, or about, a City, and the line ‘A steampunk gangster unearths a statue in the air.’ This month’s MWW must start with, or be inspired by this line:

‘She scrambled hither wither through the twisting tunnels and back alleyways of the underground kingdom, her footsteps a lurid stacatto in the lonesome darkness. ‘

Which I think has quite a lot of potential…

I hope to see you there!

Janshi

Edit: ^Raven^ called the MWW a contest on his podcast. I just want to ensure that you know that the MWW is NOT a contest. The MWW is a writing workshop for you to improve your skills, and there is no prize beyond your own satisfaction at having your work read by others. Imperial Literature DOES hold contests however, and when we have our next one (coming soon!) I will be sure to notify you all immediately.

CWF Stargate SG-1 RPG Night @ Battleground Update

On September 21st we announced a weekly RPG night held at Battleground Games & Hobby in Abington, Ma.  We are now pleased to inform everyone that we have the necessary people to begin running this game.

The game will be run by our very own Steve and it will be held weekly on Friday evenings at 6:30pm at Battleground in Abington, Ma.  We will be playing Stargate SG-1 starting Friday September 29th.  That night we will all begin by rolling out our characters.

We have a solid core of 4 players but new additions are always welcomed.  If you’re interested in playing be sure to contact Steve on AIM or e-mail as wolfyugo (wolfyugo@aol.com for e-mail).  Stay tuned for updates on the progression of the game.

Now open up that Stargate and let’s explore some other worlds!

Hack Attacks = Opportunity to Increase Security Awareness

In light of recent hack attacks this is a great opportunity to raise awareness on internet security. Back when we were a forum we had a thread titled “PC Necessities for FREE (or almost)!” that is still valid.

As such, we’re taking the opportunity to share the information from there with you now. Please note it covers more than internet security programs (such as firewalls, anti-virus, and anti-spyware).

Overview

Many people think owning/using a computer means spending a lot of money for it to be useful and safe. But, that isn’t so. These days there are many computer necessities available for users at little or no cost. This article shall mention such necessities, by category, providing links and costs plus analysis for each product.

Anti-Spyware

If you’re online spyware is bound to infiltrate your system. There is a plethora of anti-spyware programs for sale but why pay when good free programs are available?

Our first recommended program is Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware SE. The NSA, here in America, uses an advance version to safeguard their PCs. Ad-Aware SE can be downloaded for FREE. There is an enhanced version costing $26.96 but the free Ad-Aware is more than suitable for most users.

The next recommended program is Spybot Search & Destroy. This completely open-source project is FREE. The author accepts donations via Paypal on the website. However, you don’t need to pay to use the program. In addition, Spybot S&D includes TeaTimer, which is a component that actively monitors your computer for attempted spyware intrusions.

Lastly, Microsoft has a free beta of a new anti-spyware program named Windows AntiSpyware/Defender. Microsoft bought Giant AntiSpyware who previously ran this as a paid utility. Now, owners of genuine/legal copies of Microsoft Windows can download the software to use on their machines. It will easily scan for spyware every day and has other user configurable options. Please note that using this program can cause a file called MSpNGs.exe to run in the background that may use up all your system resources.

We strongly recommend that users actively use at least 2 anti-spyware programs. I personally employ all three of the above and am as spyware free as possible. But, if you don’t have Windows as an OS or if you don’t trust Microsoft then we suggest you use Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy.
