The new Black Gobbo issue 109 is now available. It has enough LotR goodness to make your head spin and a dabbling of Space Orks to boot.  This issue is a must read for LotR enthusiasts. Check it out at Black Gobbo E-zine 109.

I wasn’t too happy with #107 but #109 is quite good.  All the LotR content is a nice change and it is well done.  I won’t claim that my comments here and in the January 24, 2008 episode of the podcast resulted in this changes.  But, I’m sure that GW at least partly agrees with those remarks and their internal review of the e-zine has recommended a change of the methodology.

The Harad as Allies article, and the Harad Army Lists article, both have lots of great content.  The Allies one shows a small and larger point size version of each list for most of the lists.  Plus, it gives sufficient reasoning behind the choices.  The Painting Harad Details article is fun to look at and fits in with what one finds in an army book or codex.  The pic of the Corsairs of Umbar sprue was nice but not overly useful or necessary.  All GW had to do with that was post it in the LotR Harad section of the site.  It didn’t really deserve special inclusion in Black Gobbo.  Same goes for the Haradrim Raiders sprue.  Lastly, the Ork Terrain was fun to look at.  But, it could have been more useful and significant if the article was a walk through for making each of the pieces.  I know Space Orks, and greenskins in general, cobble their structures together from disparate components forming a solid and useful product.  Naturally a lot of that occurs when you, the terrain maker, dig through your bitz and join parts together resulting in terrain that is unique.  But, even a rough guide would have been helpful.

All in all Black Gobbo 109 is a vast improvement over #107 and even an improvement on #108.  I think it is worth 4 stars and a pat on the back of the Black Gobbo team for the improvements.  Many thanks and please keep it up.

The new Black Gobbo issue 107 is now available. It has a plethora of greenskin goodness for the new Space Orks. Plus, it has a nice article on Harad for LotR. The e-zine is usually a blast and this issue follows through. Check it out at Black Gobbo E-zine 107.

Unfortunately I’m usually less than enthused with the depth of the e-zine. What they do is often good but they don’t provide much beyond the surface. Take the Harad Background article in the new issue. It is some shiny pics and a couple paragraphs of background. This is the sort of thing that used to be on the GW site as regular content. Now it is “special” and deserving of VIP treatment in their e-zine. The background is good and fun to read but I don’t think it qualifies as e-zine material.

On another front there’s a technical point I take issue with. The Space Ork reference sheet is prominently displayed at the top right of the e-zine. Clicking on the image, or the link, takes us not to the pdf reference sheet nor a Space Ork page. It instead takes us to the general entry page for all 40k Quick Reference Sheets. I realize that the other sheets are helpful but if I click on a Space Ork reference sheet link (image or link) I expect to go directly to a Space Ork reference sheet or a page dedicated to the Space Ork reference sheet.

When I link people to articles on the blog I don’t link them to the main page and tell them to search or click a link for the article. I give them the URL directly to the article so they can dig in and enjoy. GW should use this as an example for them to emulate.

Battleground Games Logo

More images have arrive from the Apocalypse Mega-Battle held at Battleground Games on Saturday, January 7th. The event was a huge success with lots of carnage and explosions. We will be sharing pictures, video, and audio from the event with you as it is made available to us.

The images below were sent to me by Commissar Grey on the BG forum. He also helped to create the tables and a lot of the terrain on them. Be sure to head over to the official BG forum to see the original images and all the new stuff people are posting.

If you have any pics, video, or audio from the event please send it attached in an e-mail to cwfgamecast [at] wargamingforums [dot] com.

See if you can ID the people in the pics. I’ll give you one to start off. Third pic down is my friend Steve’s stomach.

Leave a comment with their name and what pic they’re in. We’ll make captions as necessary.

We scoured the new WD and have chosen 5 Quick Picks for your perusal. If you hate reading the entire mag, have a short attention span, or just want the best here’s 5 sections you can’t miss. Our top pick is the Design Studio A Year in Review/What the Future Holds.

Don’t forget to read the complete table of contents for WD #336 from our article Inside White Dwarf #336 Jan. 2008.

  1. Tactica Aeronautica p. 15. Nice expansion for Forgeworld’s Aeronautica Imperialis. Provides a clix atmosphere to 40k air combat and adds a healthy dose of Tau.
  2. Waaagh! Da Orks: Design Notes p. 22-35. The who, what, when, where, how and why of the new Orks. This is complete with sample list, breakdown or sprues, and painting guide. It is a one stop overview for all Ork Warbosses.
  3. Design Studio: A Year in Review/What the Future Holds p. 60-65. If you spent 2007 on Mars you missed all the great GW achievements. Improved customer service, Apocalypse, and tons of codices just to name a few. A terrific peek at 2008’s many surprises is included too!
  4. Lord of the Rings: Movie Moments p. 66-71. This pick is dedicated to scoper22 who reminded us of how kickass LotR is. The game is all about the epic, in value or scope, moments portrayed on screen. You will get loads of ideas for recreating your favorite movie moments in this wonderful article.
  5. Warhammer Tactica: Flying Creatures p. 84-89. Much ink has been devoted to 40k of late. But, we mustn’t forget Warhammer Fantasy. Flying monsters are terrifying if used properly. Thankfully this article will set you on the straight and narrow.
