Something Looks A Little Different Here…

YES! We have changed our appearance. Spring fast approaches and with it comes Spring cleaning. We’ve done some cleaning of our own. First up is Mimbo, by Darren Hoyt, which provides a magazine oriented style.

The CWF Game Cast wishes to reflect its maturation from a personal blog to a gaming news blog supported by members of the industry. We refocused our purview, redesigned our logos, and restarted our podcast. We renamed it to reflect our changes. The right new theme, in our case Mimbo, simplifies navigation and our process of conveying information.

Mimbo highlights key information for visitors. The most recent article takes center stage. Links to Monty & the Fox’s Wargaming Show, War at Sea Digitization Project, and the Editor’s Choice Award sit above the masthead. A search bar awaits your input to retrieve content from the vault. RSS feed links can be found in a sidebar at right. That sidebar includes a wealth of information. Links to our sponsors, our affiliations, our friends, and our Facebook page are just a few of the valuable resources. It culminates with Recent Posts, Recent Comments, and our Twitter feed.

On the left of the page you will find Featured content. This is usually a handful of articles pertaining to Contents, Announcements, and our Podcast.

WordPress 3.0.5 Upgrade Completed

The CWF Game Cast has completed its update from its previous version of WordPress to 3.0.5. Why do this, you may ask. Instead of trying to explain it all to you, the WordPress people did a great job of it already.

Please read WordPress 3.0.5 at the official WordPress blog. That explains all the reasons why we are updating.

We also built some new fortifications to defend against spam registrations. So, anyone can once again register accounts. We will monitor the situation but hope to avoid the spam registration problem from earlier in this week.

Spam User Registration Influx

For an unknown reason we’re experiencing an influx of what appear to be spam user registrations on the blog. Due to this, we are shutting down user registrations until we can institute superior countermeasures.

If you wish to create a user account please contact us at our e-mail address of cwfgamecast@wargamingforums.com. We will create your account for you. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Consequently, if you can suggest something better than SABRE and Askimet for WordPress we’d be most appreciative.

WordPress 3.0.3 Update Completed

The CWF Game Cast has completed its update from its previous version of WordPress to 3.0.3. Why do this, you may ask. Instead of trying to explain it all to you, the WordPress people did a great job of it already.

Please read WordPress 3.0.3 at the official WordPress blog. That explains all the reasons why we are updating.

The upgrade was performed using the automatic upgrade plugin. As easy as bulls-eying womprats in a T16. We took the time to update our Hermes blog and to update plugins on both.

WordPress 2.6.3 Update Completed

The CWF Game Cast has completed its update from its 2.6.2 version of WordPress to 2.6.3. Why do this, you may ask. Instead of trying to explain it all to you, the WordPress people did a great job of it already.

Please read WordPress 2.6.3 at the official WordPress blog. That explains all the reasons why we are updating.

The upgrade was performed using the automatic upgrade plugin making this easy as bulls-eying womp rats on Tatooine. We even updated our Woopra plugin version 1.4.0.3 and finished everything in less than 5 minutes. Version 2.6.3 fixes a security hole with Snoopy, which is used by WordPress.

Couple this with our previous installation and activation of Gears and we arrive at speedier blogging. If you have a user account and use either Internet Explorer or Firefox please do the following. Sign into your account. Go to Site Admin. At the top right of the screen you’ll see your username, Log Out, Help, Forums, and Turbo. Click on Turbo and then install and activate Gears. If you are on a dial-up connection (i.e. AOL) you’ll receive a speedier user experience on the blog.

You can also view the below video for all the bells and whistles in WP 2.6.

WordPress 2.6.1 Update Completed Plug Plugin Upgrades

The CWF Game Cast has completed its update from its 2.6.1 version of WordPress to 2.6.2. Why do this, you may ask. Instead of trying to explain it all to you, the WordPress people did a great job of it already.

Please read WordPress 2.6.2 at the official WordPress blog. That explains all the reasons why we updated.

The upgrade was performed using the automatic upgrade plugin making this as mindless as a Paulie Shore film. We even updated all our plugins and finished everything in less than 12 minutes. Version 2.6.2 fixes a security hole making us safer than ever.  Our upgraded plugins, such as the Similar Posts and Woopra plugins, provided better functionality than ever before.

I could get all cheesy and say something like how you can always feel safe getting your gaming news at the CWF Game Cast.  Or, I could say that 300 or 300,000 Spartans won’t breach our Trojan walls.  But, you get enough cheese from Games Workshop.  Why amplify that?

Instead I’ll say that we’re committed to giving you the gaming news you need in a secure environment.  ’nuff said.

Plugin Update: Woopra 1.3 Installed

The CWF Game Cast has completed the installation of a great new feature called Woopra.  Many of you may already be familiar with this incredible analytical tool for blogs, websites, and online forums but this is relatively new to me.

I’ve been using WordPress.com Stats Plugin but it only provides basic information and requires a WP.com login.  Not everyone has that and while free not everyone wants one of those.  Woopra is a great and easy to use plugin.  A friend of mine, Shane, who runs Bugssite, tons of great blog posts on Washington D.C., computer games, and movies, is a member of the Woopra team.  He alerted me to the benefits of Woopra, encouraged me to join (FREE), urged on my website activations (in less than 12 hours), and helped me with the install and plugin activation.  He even blogged about the new version, which we’re using, at Woopra 1.3 Plugin Released, News.

His help speeded everything up and I’m incredibly grateful of his assistance.  Kickin’ support Shane!  Even if you don’t have a Shane of your own Woopra is so easy a snotling could do it.  I highly recommend Woopra for all your online needs.  It is FREE and adaptable so there’s no excuse for not using this superb tool.

That said Woopra will be a huge benefit for us.  It allows for live tracking, via an applet you download onto your computer (yes it runs on Mac OS X too), and it has detailed stats in both the applet and the plugin.

I simply cannot say enough positive things about Woopra.  So, please read Woopra Plugin 1.3 at the official Woopra blog.  Of course, be sure to download Woopra and tell your friends where you head about it…right here at the CWF Game Cast.

WordPress 2.6.1 Update Completed

The CWF Game Cast has completed its update from its 2.6 version of WordPress to 2.61. Why do this, you may ask. Instead of trying to explain it all to you, the WordPress people did a great job of it already.

Please read WordPress 2.6.1 at the official WordPress blog. That explains all the reasons why we are updating.

The upgrade was performed using the automatic upgrade plugin making this easy as bulls-eying womp rats on Tatooine.  We even updated all our plugins and finished everything in less than 12 minutes.  Version 2.6.1 fixes a slew of bugs in v2.6 including one that’s very close to our heart.  We utilize a lot of plugins to make your visiting experience as good as humanly possible.  Sometimes that can slow the blog down.  This new version of WordPress remedies that situation allowing us to make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

New Blog Layout: i3Theme 1.6 Classic (Center Edition)

For almost two years now we’ve been using the same old setup.  All the major content is at the left and all the sidebars are on the right.  We’ve used one sidebar, two sidebars, one sidebar, and finally two sidebars.

After two years change has spread to the CWF Game Cast.  We have adopted the i3Theme 1.6 Classic (Center Edition) as our new official, shiny, and aesthetic layout.  The theme bares an uncanny resemblance to our previous layout, the i3Theme 1.6 Classic (Right Edition), with one major change.  We now feature a left and a right sidebar with the main content in the center.

This is a layout comfortable and familiar to most users and is one of the most requested changes by visitors.  This past July we celebrated our 3rd birthday, under the blog setup, without fanfare.  Changing layouts is a birthday gift from us to all of you.

We believe you fill find the blog more intuitive to use than ever before.  Despite the change you should still fill at home.  We kept as much as possible in the same place and working the same way as before.  You can still rate articles at the top of articles.  You can still find related content at the bottom of a post.  You can still leave comments the way you used to.

This, we hope, will herald some new advances in functionality.  We are unhappy with WordPress’ so called improvements to adding media into posts.  The gallery merely creates a jumbled version of pictures as evidenced by our War at Sea Task Force Picture Gallery (don’t open unless you have broadband).  We like what we see at Battlestar Last Supper ‘Mind’ Photo on my friend’s blog.  Click the picture in that blog post and you’ll see what we mean.  He’s using a plugin called Lightbox to get that to happen.  The official Monsterpocalypse website has a similar setup that we enjoy.  As does the blog of WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and to our knowledge he’s only using the basic gallery setup from WP 2.5.

Some old friends have been removed and some will hopefully return.  Upgrading to WP 2.5 caused a lot of problems and we removed some features to maintain functionality.  One such feature is WP-Polls, which we hope to return in the not too distant future.

In the meantime we’re continuing to provide you with the best gaming content we can.  We’ve been spending a lot of time on War at Sea and its new release Task Force.  Coming around the bend in the beginning of 2009 is Monsterpocalypse.  Plus, there’s always a slew of 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Warmachine, and board gaming news.
