CWF Game Cast Episode 58: Henry Hyde and Battlegames Magazine

Host Jonathan J. Reinhart and guest Henry Hyde, editor of Battlegames Magazine, discuss a myriad of topics. Jonathan gets Henry to reveal some of his background, musical talent, and an explanation on why Battlegames Magazine stands out. The short answer is, “words.” This gargantuan episode clocks in at over 2 hours and 24 minutes making it one of the longest episodes for our show. You definitely will enjoy it.

Henry devotes a chunk of his appearance to the Society for Creative Anachronism, the Landsknecht, and the Pennsic Wars (check out this Youtube video of Pennsic Wars #1). Jonathan chimes in with Live Action Roleplaying and the Tales of Valor. Henry sets the stage for the rest of the show when he reveals his condensed curruclum vitae. Who knew Henry gave up a lucrative career in insurance to become the editor and owner of Battlegames?

Jonathan inquires why listeners to buy and read Battlegames Magazine instead of the plethora of other gaming magazines. Henry responds with “words.” Jonathan prompts him to extrapolate on that resulting in the history of Henry’s magazine and philosophy of magazines. The pair move the chat onto transitioning into historical gaming using Jonathan as an example. Key topics area highlighted that every gamer must address when becoming a historical wargamer. Size, manufacturer, price, storage, and pre-game prep (painting/assembly) all must be considered. This opens the door for a discussion of paint brushes. Do you go with expensive brushes or something cheap and replaceable?

Henry then discusses his fitness undertaking as part of the Battlegames Combat Stress Appeal. A very important focus is placed on the Combat Stress charity, what they do, and how you can help. If you’re able, please make a donation using the Combat Stress JustGiving page.

The table turns as Henry fires off a few questions at Jonathan who explains how he got into gaming and how he got into historical gaming. He says why he gave up playing Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy. Jonathan moves the topic onto Henry’s upcoming book, The Wargaming Compendium, available for pre-order on Amazon UK with a price of 16.25 GBP.

The discussion ends with Henry telling listeners how to find the magazine, contact him, read his blog, follow him on Twitter, and visit his Facebook page.

The show winds down with the the Music to Game By segment with Bailey Records’ “Dogs of War” from Stratos’ album Cybernet Official Roleplaying Soundtrack and the new Battlegames Magazine promo.

Pandemic Stop Action Video

We’ve…well, I’ve been pretty obsessed with Pandemic since my friend Kurt recommended the game. Listeners to the podcast will note updates corresponding with the latest attempt to beat the game.

It may be difficult to picture how the game as played. The below stop action video not only is interesting to watch but serves as a good overview for how the game is played. The video won’t replace a good tutorial or read through of the rules. But, it shows events unfurling.

If you like the video be sure to check out the original discussion thread on BoardGameGeek.

Bloodline Champions FREE Game

I came across this video on Youtube and it really intrigued me as an action game inspired in part by WoW. I haven’t played it but am interested in giving it a try.

CWF Game Cast Episode 47: 12-7-Games and War at Sea With Bill Dettmers

Host Jonathan J. Reinhart explains Tom Barbalet’s absence for this episode. He introduces Bill Dettmers, CEO and Owner of 12-7-Games.com, for this special episode of the podcast. As owner of 12-7-Games.com, Bill is the one who orchestrated the sponsorship of the CWF Game Cast and Monty and the Fox’s Wargaming Show.

Jonathan and Bill discuss all aspects of 12-7-Games. Bill discusses his love for War at Sea leading Jonathan into a chat on War at Sea highlights. Bill mentions a recent WAS game where he fielded a ton of Georges. Jonathan references the Invasion of the Bahamas scenario he played with the historical gaming group from Battleground Games and Hobbies. The video is at the bottom of this post. Bill mentions the Axis & Allies ForuMINI and gives his stance on the controversial topic of reissuing WAS units for new players.

Bill provides contact information for 12-7-Games but incorrectly cites their phone number. Jonathan provides the correct phone number at the start of the show. It is toll free at 877-787-9366. Bill shares his wish for a way for young players to get some of the older units they need without having to pay for them with money.

Jonathan runs with that idea to create the next CWF Game Cast contest. Listeners, and blog visitors, are asked to submit your ideas for how young players can get the older (and out of print) War at Sea units they need/want without needing to spend money. Bill mentioned the need for “sweat equity” and posited that the young people could do research or other work (converting models etc) to compensate for the models they need.

Please submit all of your ideas. We will pick the one we like best as the winner. If more than one person submits a great idea then there may be multiple winners. The prize basket so far consists of a Monty and the Fox’s Wargaming Show t-shirt, a War at Sea booster (courtesy of 12-7-Games.com), and prizes not yet decided on. The other prizes most likely will include some previously mentioned prizes along with PDF game downloads.

War at Sea: Spotlight on Danaussie’s Custom Model Painting

War at Sea is a wonderful CMG (collectible miniatures game) but many people overlook the hobby side of the game.  The models are nicely sculpted and painted but they are not always historically accurate.  There is a growing number of gamers who collect the models to do more than just play the game.  They customize the models by converting and/or painting them.

Axis & Allies ForuMINI member Danaussie is one of those individuals.  He recently wowed me when he posted several pictures of his newly custom painted USS Baltimore.  After seeing those pics I knew I needed more.  Dan, a resident of beautiful Canberra in the Land Down Under, has kindly agreed to give me permission to share his pictures with all of you.  I have a small sample of his work to share and will hopefully have more available in the future.

Before we get to his spectacular artwork we have one other thing to share.  Not only is Dan an accomplished artist but he took the time to compile a painting tutorial as a PDF document.  If you like how Dan paints and want to learn his techniques please read his tutorial.  It is very nicely done.  Also please see his other works at Danaussie’s WAS Custom Painted Gallery (you can browse the folders by nation).

War at Sea: Flank Speed Stat Card Movie

I thought it’d be fun to do something special for everyone who loves the digitized War at Sea cards I’ve shared.  We recently finished digitizing the Flank Speed stat cards and they look incredible (I know I know…self praise is no praise).

Using my iMac I crafted a movie slideshow of the Flank Speed stat cards, set it to music, and have it ready for your viewing pleasure.  I need to mention that it is a little long and those of you with slow internet connections will not want to view the movie.

If you’re afraid that your connection isn’t up to par then please do not view the video.  Otherwise…

War at Sea: Flank Speed 200pt Multiplayer

On Wednesday September 3rd four of us gathered at Battleground Games in Abington to play a massive 200pt multiplayer game of War at Sea.  We wanted to focus on the units released in Flank Speed.

Admirals Adrian and Cary brought a coordinated Axis fleet from the mighty Third Reich and Italian Empire.  They faced the combined might of the joint United Kingdom and United States task force led by Admirals John and Jonathan (your’s truly).

To document this event I used my digital camera and then through the magic of Apple turned those digital photos into a digital slide show.  You can see it below.  I hope you enjoy.
