FREE Paper Terrain

Do you ever wish you could have some nice looking buildings and terrain but don’t have the skill to scratchbuild nor the money for the fancy (but expensive) pre-made pieces? Paper terrain is the answer to your prayers. It can be printed on any printer, on any paper (heavier paper like 125lb is best), and won’t cost you any money to get.

There’s a lot of resources on the net. But, we’ve found some great ones to share with you.

Last August we shared information on a new FREE building pack for Combat Storm. We even shared a video tutorial, crafted by Dave Reiter, to show you how to construct the buildings in the pack.

Today I received another e-mail from Dave Reiter, one of the geniuses at Strategy Wave Studios that makes the game, about a new FREE download. You heard that correctly. Combat Storm players and would be players can download the free building pack. This pack lets you make sandbags perfect for any location.

Before you download the building pack be sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader as the pack is a pdf file. You can get Acrobat Reader, for FREE, at Adobe Acrobat Reader. I have version 8.1.1 for Mac OS X Leopard and the building pack shows perfectly!

In future news, we also have artists currently working on some more new papercraft buildings, as well as some papercraft cars and trucks. I think you guys will really enjoy the vehicles as they really add so much to the battlefield both visually and strategically. Vehicles offer good cover for your squads and really bring street fighting to a whole new level.

Combat Storm Building Pack Video Tutorial

Combat Storm Banner Small

So you are one of the people who downloaded the free building pack. Now, you can use some help assembling that bad boy. Its basically straightforward but a tutorial can iron out the kinks. Luckily Dave Reiter, lead designer of Combat Storm, has created a Youtube video tutorial for the building kit. It spends roughly 8 minutes to assemble the middle eastern building. But, the other items are assembled with the same method.

If you haven’t gotten it yet remember you can download the free building pack. This pack lets you make one middle eastern building, barricades, and a stone wall. Print it out a bunch of times and you have a small town. You need the FREE Acrobat Reader from Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the building pack. I have version 8.1.1 for Mac OS X Leopard and the building pack shows perfectly!

Once you have that all printed out, be sure to follow the directions in the building pack, you are ready to watch the tutorial shown below.

Back in September 2006 we shared information on a brand new miniatures game using plastic army men. Our article, Combat Storm Game = Dust Off Old Plastic Army Men, discussed Combat Storm; a set of rules to playing with plastic army men. I’m sure we can all recall using the plastic men as children and being able to use them in a formalized setting makes them socially acceptable for adults to use.

Today I received an e-mail from Dave Reiter, one of the geniuses at Strategy Wave Studios that makes the game, about a FREE download. You heard that correctly. Here’s the official press release from Strategy Wave Studios.

COMBAT STORM OFFERS FREE DOWNLOADABLE BUILDING CREATION PACK

WATERLOO , ON – January 16, 2008 – By popular demand, Strategy Wave Studios has released a building creation pack as a free download for their popular miniature wargame, Combat Storm. The pack contains colorful photo-realistic templates enabling players the ability to create their own buildings and scenery pieces and is available immediately via CombatStorm.com.

“We want to offer players the ability to create inexpensive terrain pieces that still maintain the look, quality and effectiveness of expensive store-bought terrain without breaking the bank. The templates are professionally done and also very easy to assemble,” said lead designer Dave Reiter.”We take pride in looking after our fanbase and offering free downloads which is something gamers will be seeing more of from the Combat Storm franchise in the near future.”

The first in a series of building creation packs can be downloaded directly at http://www.combatstorm.com/download.html.

Combat Storm is a 2-4 player miniature strategy wargame game that uses green and tan plastic army men as game pieces and a large playing area as the battlefield.

In Combat Storm, players custom-build their own squads of plastic army men, selecting from troops such as Riflemen, Support Infantrymen, Snipers, Special Forces Soldiers, Demolition Experts and Anti-Armor Experts. Each troop-type has its own unique characteristics, weapons and specialties, allowing for creative and tactical game-play. In addition, players can also deploy tanks and transports into battle to provide additional firepower and support.

The Combat Storm Rulebook is available through online ordering via the Combat Storm website: http://www.combatstorm.com.

Combat Storm Game = Dust Off Old Plastic Army Men

Yesterday I got an interesting e-mail from Dave Reiter. At first I wondered if it was spam but then I looked at the subject and it seemed like it could be a real e-mail for me in light of this blog and podcast. On opening it I was made aware of an interesting new game called Combat Storm by company Strategy Wave.

Combat Storm, or Operation Plastic as it used to be called, is different from any other game company I’ve seen. It has managed to create a rulebook and system for playing with plastic army men.

I fondly remember playing with plastic army guys as a kid in the ’80s. Bought them at the corner store for a few bucks giving 100 or so. Out on the grass and in the house they fought over everything. Having a formalized rules system for this is a nice way to recapture one’s childhood yet adapt it for “grown-up” play.
